The National Meteorological Service and the National Emergency Management Organization(NEMO) are closely monitoring a powerful Category 4 Hurricane Matthew which is located at 13.5 North latitude and 71.6 West Longitude packing winds of 140 miles per hour. Matthew is moving West South West at 9 Miles per hour. The system is more than 1, 000 miles away from Belize.

Matthew is expected to make a turn to the North during the course of the weekend. Even though Matthew poses no threat to Belize and the extreme western Caribbean, persons living on the cayes, in flood prone areas, fisher folks, and farmers are advised to monitor Hurricane Matthew in the event that the northward turn does not materialize over the weekend.

NEMO national and district committees will be notified to monitor and prepare for any developments associated with powerful Hurricane Matthew.

The National Meteorological Service and the National Emergency Management Organization continue to monitor Hurricane Matthew.
