On 16 August, the Cabinet of Ministers supported a draft decree prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “On the allocation of funding to Afghanistan from the national budget programme “Funds for Unforeseen Events””. The decision is meaningful in light of preparations for the conference on Afghanistan upcoming 4 and 5 October in Brussels. During the conference the Member States are expected to affirm their commitment to the development of Afghanistan by making pledges on their further political and financial support.

Under the decree, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be granted 35 thousand euro for making contributions to the regular budget of UNESCO and thereby supporting the development of Afghanistan’s educational sector. Also, 15 thousand euro will be allocated to the Ministry of Transport to go ahead with its development cooperation project at the Polytechical University of Kabul.

The project envisages support for the training of Afghanistan’s young railway specialists, and Latvia is planning to deliver multimedia classroom equipment to the Polytechical University of Kabul. Since 2012, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Transport, Riga Technical University and the Professional Education Competence Centre “Daugavpils Tehnikums” have been actively and successfully cooperating in the implementation of this project. Today’s decision by the Cabinet of Ministers will further contribute to cooperation between Latvia and Afghanistan.

Latvia is providing annual financial contribution of USD 500,000 to the NATO-Afghan National Army Trust Fund for 2015-2017. At the NATO Summit in Warsaw, Latvia committed itself to continued contributions at the current amount from 2018 to 2020.

At present, 22 Latvian troops are taking part in the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan. A Latvian civilian expert is serving on the European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan, EUPOL.
