Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi and the Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Masakazu Hamachi, will sign the exchange of notes for the Pacific Climate Change Centre Project under Japan’s Grant Aid Assistance today.

The estimated cost of the project is $23,000,000 (US$8.7 million).

While Samoa has consistently developed agriculture, forestry and fisheries as well as tourism as its main growth sectors, it faces economic challenges from a significant trade deficit along with vulnerabilities to natural disasters such as cyclones, floods, earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis and impacts of climate change. Therefore, enhanced resilience is one of the most important issues for Samoa’s development.

The Climate Change Centre Project aims to enhance the operational capacity of the Centre through improving the skills and expertise of all Pacific Islands developing states, in applied research training and policy initiatives.

The Centre, to be located at the SPREP headquarters will host a range of different secondment of experts researchers and officials who will work together to strengthen the resilience of the region to the impacts of climate change.

The project’s is well aligned to the prioritized areas of Japan’s assistance namely “disaster prevention”, “environment” and “climate change” that were declared by the Government of Japan at the 7th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM7) in 2015.
