More than 800 households sheltering in United Nations compound in Tomping have started receiving relief aid.

The UN’s food agency – WFP and the International Organization for Migration, IOM plus other partner distributed blankets, mosquito nets, sleeping mats and cartons of biscuits to the internally displaced people at the PoC site in Juba.

Philip Boterere, IOM’s shelter department operations officer, said on Wednesday that he hopes that these items will cushion their situation for now.

“Households that we have estimated are 862 households, then they are receiving blankets, they are receiving mosquito nets, they are receiving sleeping mats just to be able to help them given the conditions of the weather and the sleeping arrangements in the place where they are housed at the moment.”

In a related development, the Adventist Relief Agency, a faith based organization said more than 40 households are sheltered in its compund.

An official of the ministry of foreign affairs in Juba, Ambassador Peter Morison Yugu, visited the ADRA compound to assess the situation of the IDPs there. He describes what he saw.

“They were calm but in need. Small children were crying, there is no enough water, pit latrine have become a problem, there are no shelter other than they being accommodated in the classroom meant for the Seven days self-help secondary school.”

Ambassador Peter Morison Yugu, says the items distributed by ADRA are not sufficient enough and more needs to be done.

“They were giving food, but then when I entered their store I was a little bit disturbed because it seems what they are distributing is the last grain that they have in the store,” said ambassador Yugu.

He encouraged ADRA to join hands with other international organizations, other partners to boost their support to the IDPs.
