1. On September 22 (Wed), the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency assistance in kind, equivalent to about 9.7 million yen, comprising blankets, tents, and sleeping mats, to the Republic of Panama, which has sustained a torrential rain disaster.

2. Torrential rains that mainly hit Panama City starting on the evening of September 17 (Fri) flooded rivers in the city and caused mudslides, leaving 14 people dead, three persons missing, 2,555 houses destroyed or damaged, and other damage in the districts of San Miguelito, Juan Diaz, and Pacora (as of September 21).

At present, evacuees in Panama are forced to lead difficult lives. The Government of Panama, while conducting relief operations of its own, has requested emergency aid from the Government of Japan.

3. The Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency aid from a humanitarian point of view for those afflicted by the disaster and in view of the friendly relations between Japan and Panama.
