SITUATION

  • Two strong earthquakes of magnitude 6.7 M and 6.8 M at a similar depth occurred in the province of Esmeraldas on 18 May.

  • The first one, that had a magnitude of 6.7 M and depth of 32 km, was recorded at 7.57 UTC. The epicentre was located approx. 35 km east-southeast of Muisne. USGS PAGER estimated that 88 000 people were exposed to "Strong" shaking. The second one that had a magnitude of 6.8 M and depth of 31 km, was recorded at 16.46 UTC. The epicentre was located approx. 46 km east-southeast of Muisne. USGS PAGER estimated that 164 000 people were exposed to "Strong" shaking. Both earthquakes were near the epicentre of the 7.8 M earthquake that occurred on 16 April causing widespread damage and casualties.

  • Local media reported over 10 000 people evacuated, one dead in Tosagua (Manabi province), 85 injured and over 2 500 homes were partially or fully damaged in the provinces of Esmeraldas and Manabi, as of 19 May early morning (UTC).
