  • Since January, severe drought and saltwater intrusion caused by the impact of El Niño (high temperature and low rainfall) has affected more than two million people. 18 provinces in the South-Central region, Central Highlands and Mekong Delta are severely affected of which 14 have declared a State of Emergency. In the Mekong Delta, the drought and related decrease in groundwater levels have resulted in the most extensive saltwater intrusion in 90 years.

  • Two million people are facing water shortages and are at risk of diseases due to the use of unsafe water. Drought-related crop loss is affecting the food security of 1.1 million people and increases the risk of malnutrition.

  • An inter-sectorial rapid needs assessment undertaken by the Government with support of international humanitarian actors identified priority needs in water, sanitation and hygiene, food security, health and nutrition.

  • An Emergency Response plan is under preparation to address life-saving and livelihood protection interventions for the next three to five months.
