A series of earthquakes and aftershocks has hit Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu Island in Japan including the 6.5 magnitude tremor at 9:26 p.m. (GMT+9) on 14 April and the 7.3 magnitude at 1:25 a.m. on 16 April. Aftershocks still continue to hit Kumamoto and neighboring Prefectures in Kyushu.

Situation as of 18 April

The earthquakes caused 40 deaths and injured over 1,500 people – 183,882 people are displaced on 17 April. Of the 45 municipalities in Kumamoto Prefecture, 12 were severely affected (more than 1,000 people displaced for each).

These municipalities are located in the Central and Western part of Kumamoto prefecture. About 3 million people live there. Over thousands of houses have been destroyed and damaged. Afraid of returning to their homes, many people are sheltering in 855 emergency evacuation centers in schools and public offices.
