Episcopal Relief and Development helps families in Mexico after floods
Episcopal Relief and Development is providing
emergency supplies to families left homeless in northern Mexico after devastating
floods in early April. The town of Piedras Negras on the Escondido River,
about 150 miles southwest of San Antonio, Texas, was declared a disaster
area.
Torrential rain caused the river to
overflow, triggering flash floods and killing 33 people, damaging or destroying
600 homes, and leaving at least two thousand people homeless. Local officials
called the flooding some of the worst in the region's history.
"The church in Piedras Negras is now a shelter and many people sleep in just blankets," said the Rt. Rev. Marcelino Rivera Delgado, Bishop of Northern Mexico. "The congregation prepares food for many people even for those living in other areas. The situation is very sad," stated Bishop Rivera.
On behalf of the Episcopal Church, Episcopal Relief and Development is providing emergency assistance to the Diocese of Northern Mexico for people left homeless by the floods. ERD is supplying shelter, clothing, blankets, bedding, and food to families.
