Situation

1. An earthquake of magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale hit the province of Erzurum in Eastern Turkey at 21:30 hours local time on Thursday, 25 March 2004. Epicentre of the quake was the =C7at district of Erzurum (latitude: 39.7382, longtitude: 40.9115). There have been 51 after-shocks with the magnitudes ranging between 2.5 and 4 in the first 12 hours after the earthquake.

2. According to preliminary information received from the Government, national and international media as well as the IFRC, 45 buildings in Askale town and surrounding 15 villages, which include Buyukgecit, Kucukgecit, Karabiyik and Kandilli, have collapsed. A total of 4,000 people are said to be affected. The death toll stands at 9 deaths with over 30 others severely injured.

National response

3. A multitude of national SAR teams reported to the scene starting a few hours after the incident.

4. The Turkish Red Crescent (TRC) provided 195 tents, 1,500 blankets, 1,000 food packages (another 70 food parcels), 200 kitchen sets and 15,750 bottled water. The TRC has also sent a medical team, a disaster response coordinator and a communications officer to the affected area.

International response

5. OCHA has been in contact with the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator, and has confirmed that no request for international assistance has been made. This has been confirmed by the IFRC.

6. UNDP in Ankara does not foresee the need for the deployment of a UN mission to the field as the national response was found adequate.

7. OCHA has activated the Virtual OSOCC, and international USAR teams of INSARAG are monitoring the situation.
