This report is based on information provided by the Office of the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Indonesia, National Coordinating Board for the Management of Disaster and IDPs/Refugees (BAKORNAS PBP), Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), Health Department (DEPKES), Social Department (DEPSOS), UNICEF, IFRC, MSF-Belgium, Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), OCHA team on mission and media reports.

I. SITUATION

1. Four out of ten sub-districts of Nabire district (total estimated population 142,000), have been affected by the earthquake of 6 February namely, Nabire, Wanger, Napan, and Yaor.

2. Based on initial assessment, approximately 2,700 households have been affected, of which 1,300 correspond to Nabire town.

3. Some 731 houses were badly damaged or collapsed. Approximately 1,808 houses were slightly or moderately damaged. Public facilities such as 80 TNI/Police houses were also damaged.

4. Nine bridges are badly damaged with large cracks and cannot be used for traffic. In addition, 20 schools, 30 religious structures (mosque, churches, temples), 5 traditional markets, one Dolog warehouse, one parliament building and the district jail have sustained considerable damage.

5. The district hospital suffered non-structural damage and is temporarily out of service. Some 10 tents, provided by TNI/Police and PMI, have been established and are serving as emergency field hospital.

6. The airport tower has no structural damage and air control equipment is operational. The runway shows several cracks and cannot be used by large aircraft. However, small aircraft are regularly shuttling to and from Nabire.

7. Power lines have not suffered major damage. However, power-generating facilities have been affected and electricity has not been fully restored yet. Telecommunications are also being gradually restored and are expected to be operating at normal capacity in one week.

II. NATIONAL RESPONSE

8. Medical supplies are being provided by the Provincial Health Department both in Nabire and Biak hospital, where some of the injured people were evacuated on 9 February.

9. Local authorities are working to restore the water supply system. However, there is still an acute shortage of potable water.

10. The Central Government has provided IDR 1.3 billion (approximately USD153,700), through the Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare and the Health Department (DEPKES), while the Provincial Government provided 200 million (approximately USD23,650). The District Government provided food items and tents.

11. PMI provided 60 plastic sheeting, blood bags and serum for blood test, 50 body bags, 60 mosquito nets, and 100 family kits. Twenty PMI volunteers have been deployed in Nabire, along with one senior response officer from PMI Jakarta.
