The 16 Days of Activism in Nepal

HealthRight International, in collaboration with government of Nepal and other local stakeholders, celebrated the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence by participating in the UN’s UNiTE Campaign to End Violence Against Women in the Arghakhanchi district of Nepal. The campaign began on November 25, 2015 (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and ended on December 10, 2015 (International Human Rights Day). The objectives of the campaign were to increase awareness, strengthen existing mechanisms and increase people’s participation in ending violence against women. During 16 Days campaign period, many activities were conducted at the district level and community level.

Awareness Rally

Awareness RallyMore than 200 people from the government, NGOs, civil society, political parties, youth clubs, and schools participated in the awareness rally. The rally marched the major streets of Sandhikhark, Arghakhanchi with a banner and signs while distributing pamphlets to thousands of people.

In-laws Workshop

In-lawsAn in-laws workshop was organized at Bangi VDC of Arghakhanchi to increase community awareness on domestic violence. More than 50 women and their mother- in-laws participated in the program. The Chief District Officer, Local Development Officer, Women Development Officers, UNFPA staff, and HealthRight staff participated in the interaction program. Many issues to safeguard women’s right at the household level were discussed during the program.

Couples Quiz Competition

Couples Quiz CompetitionA married couples quiz was organized at Thada VDC of Arghakhanchi. The questions for the quiz were related to violence against women, gender-based violence, and human rights. Ten couples participated and nearly 200 people attended the event. The Chief District Officer, Local Development Officer, Women Development Officer, UNFPA staff, HealthRight staff, INSEC, and the DHO participated in the program.

Husband and Wife Interaction Workshop

A husband and wife interaction workshop was another event that took place during 16 Days campaign. This event was organized at Argha VDC of Arghakhanchi district. More than 20 couples participated in workshop that focused on violence against women. It was a great platform in the community to discuss various issues like gender, sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence. All collaborating partners including CDO, LDO, WDO, UNFPA, HealthRight, INSEC participated the workshop.

School Teaching Program

In coordination with District Education Office and local schools, education sessions on gender-based violence, child marriage and women’s rights were conducted in 10 schools and reached 500 students.

Closing Ceremony

Closing CeremonyThe closing ceremony was organized on December 10, 2015 at district headquarter in Sandhikharka, Arghakhanchi. This was last day the 16 Days campaign as well as Human Rights Day. 16,000 signatures were gathered as a commitment to eliminate gender-based violence and were displayed in the closing ceremony. All district level stakeholders including the District Administration Office, District Police Office, District Judiciary, District Development Committee, District Women and Child Development Officer, District Health Officer, UNFPA, HealthRight and hundreds of community members attended to celebrate the campaign’s end.

Conclusion:

The 16 days campaign celebrated in Arghakhanchi district was very successful and achieved its targeted objectives. The collaborative efforts among various organizations and public were observed remarkable. This event created wide spread awareness towards elimination of gender-based violence in the Arghakhanchi district of Nepal.
