Persistently below-average rainfall leads to drought in many parts of Southern Africa

Africa Weather Hazards

  1. Drought has affected many countries in Southern Africa, including Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland, and Mozambique due to the delayed start of season and erratic distribution of rainfall. Following below-average rainfall during the previous season, below-average rainfall this season has led to significantly reduced water availability, leading to livestock deaths and poor ground conditions over many areas.

  2. Abundant rainfall during the past three weeks has led to localized flooding and rising river levels over parts of Antananarivo in central Madagascar. Heavy rain is expected to continue during the upcoming week, maintaining elevated risks for flooding and landslides over flood-prone and low-lying areas.
