AHA Centre Flash Update - Typhoon Melor (Nona), Philippines, 13 December 2015

THE PHILIPPINES. Typhoon 'Melor' (local name 'Nona') which developed since 11 December 2015 has gained strength and will continue to move northwest, threatening the central part of the Philippines. Based on the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration (PAGASA), Typhoon 'Melor' is currently located 440 km East of Catarman, Northern Samar. The maximum sustained wind is 140 kph near the centre with cruising speed of up to 19 kph. Public Storm Warning Signal No.2 (with Signal Level 5 as maximum) has been issued for several provinces in Luzon and Visayas: Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Ticao Island, Northern and Eastern Samar. In the next 24 hours, the wind speed may peak to up to 180 kph (Category 3). With the current forecast, the typhoon may bring the strong winds and high rainfall intensity over the Bicol Region, Calabarzon, Central Luzon and the National Capital Region (NCR) in the next 48 hours. Flood, landslide and strong winds are associated with this type of hazard. Hence, cities and areas with high population density such as Manila, Legazpi, Naga may be vulnerable when it landfalls in the next 24 hours.

Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (RDRRMC) have been put on high alert especially those in the projected typhoon path.
RDRRMCs of Southern Luzon and Central Visayas have already conducted pre-disaster risk assessment in each of their respective areas of responsibility.

The AHA Centre Disaster Monitoring and Response System (DMRS) estimates that Typhoon 'Melor' will be dissipate on 17 December 2015.
