On Friday, May 9, 2003 the Director of the Cooperative Housing Foundation (CHF), Peter Loach and Rafael Narvaez, Executive Director of World Vision El Salvador, signed an agreement of administration to provide housing support to 500 families affected by the earthquakes of 2001.
The houses will be built in three municipalities of the Department of Usulutan: Santa Maria, Santa Elena and Ereguayquin, and in the municipality of San Rafael Oriente in the Department of San Miguel. These sectors were seriously damaged during the earthquake of the 13th of January, 2001.

This work is funded by the International Agency for the Development (AID), whose funds are being administrated by the CHF Foundation. World Vision will be in charge of executing the work. The project is worth US$1.8 million and will be completed in November.

The 500 houses will be made of concrete bricks, with an area of 41sqm, cemented floor and a zinc and aluminium roof. The houses will consist of two rooms, a living-dining room and a bathroom. They will also have sewage, potable water and an electricity system.

The benefited families own the plot of land and will be involved in the process of construction by providing labour.

"It is my desire to maintain this type of coordination and to work as a team with one same purpose: to benefit the most needy communities," stated World Vision El Salvador's Executive Director.

According to the Director of CHF, "We trust in World Vision to carry out this work, because we consider it a highly known organisation for their experience in the support of families affected by the earthquakes. This endeavour will bring hope to five thousand poor families in El Salvador."

The earthquake damaged 186,444 houses and destroyed 153,011 others.
