Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - Somali leaders and parties weakening the process of reconciliation in their war-torn country risk sanctions, the African Union has warned.
"The AU demands of all those involved in the violations to desist forthwith," the organisation's Interim Chairperson, Amara Essy, said in a statement issued here Wednesday.

Essy was particularly concerned over the reported violations of the Declaration of Cessation of Hostilities, signed 27 October 2002 in Eldoret, Kenya, by all Somali leaders taking part in the Somali national reconciliation conference.

Condemning the violations of the declaration, Essy said such acts undermined the ongoing peace talks aimed at restoring peace and stability in Somalia.

"It is all the more regrettable that the violations are occurring at a time when the facilitators of the peace process are making all efforts to put in place a monitoring mechanism.

"The violations are causing unnecessary loss of life, the destruction of property, and tremendous suffering of the people of Somalia," he pointed out.

The regional Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) sponsors the Somali peace negotiations with the support of the AU.

"Should the current situation continue, the AU will call for the imposition of sanctions against all the leaders and parties whose activities undermine the cause of reconciliation, peace and reconstruction of Somalia," Essy warned.
