Islamic Relief Worldwide has today published its annual report for 2014, which gives details of income and expenditure – and the positive impact achieved for millions of vulnerable people.

In 2014, our total global income reached £182 million – a growth of £62 million since 2012 – and voluntary income rose to a record high of 79 per cent of our total income. This year saw even more spending carried out directly through our field offices worldwide.

Often among the first to respond to humanitarian emergencies, we can work in areas other organisations cannot reach. Islamic Relief’s response to the Syria crisis gave life-saving aid to over four million people in 2014 alone, whilst more than 378,000 vulnerable Muslims, Christians, and Yazidis were assisted in conflict-torn Iraq. We continued to help the people of Gaza even through the worst of the conflict of summer 2014. A record-breaking 4.6 million people benefited from our Ramadan and Qurbani food distributions.

We also deliver vital development work, which last year saw the launch of a £2 million programme to tackle poverty and malnutrition in Yemen, the opening of four earthquake-resilient schools in Haiti and the handover of a national eye hospital in Somalia, among other highlights. Islamic Relief also delivers vital disaster risk reduction programmes. In Bangladesh alone this helped protect over 472,000 people from the effects of storms, floods and climate change.

“Around the world, Muslim communities see the devastating impact of war and poverty on their TV screens and in their newspapers, and they respond with the utmost charity and generosity,” said Dr Mohammed Ashmawey, Chief Executive of Islamic Relief Worldwide.

“As the largest Islamic charity in the world, we are proud to be the conduit between concerned people and institutions and those who need their help. We thank the big-hearted public, and multilateral and governmental donors and partners, for their continued support during a tumultuous year. There is no better measure of success than the positive impact we are making together for millions of vulnerable people – and we are on track to achieve even more in 2015.”

In total, Islamic Relief spent £160 million on humanitarian programmes in 2014. Projects that were completed this year alone directly helped over 4,477,000 people, whilst an additional 371,000 individuals benefited indirectly.

Islamic Relief is an independent humanitarian and development organisation which works in 40 countries worldwide to fight poverty and suffering. View the Annual Report 2014 here.
