Ha Noi, Nov. 21 (VNA) -- President Tran Duc Luong has highly valued IFRC's assistance to Viet Nam over the past years and its contributions to developing humanitarian activities in the country.

President Luong received Mannel Suarezdel Toro Rivero, President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), in Ha Noi on Nov. 21 morning.

He noted that the IFRC had mobilised national red cross societies, governments and international and non-governmental organisations to assist Viet Nam in disaster preparedness, relief for victims of natural calamities, people's heathcare, poverty reduction, red cross workers' training and other fields.

At the calls of the federation, the international community raised more than 30 million USD for Vietnamese flood victims in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

President Luong expressed thanks to the IFRC and national red cross societies of foreign countries for their valuable assistance to Viet Nam. He said he hoped that cooperation between the Viet Nam Red Cross and other red cross societies would be further developed for the interest of underprivileged people and Agent Orange victims in Viet Nam.
