MEXICO CITY, Oct 26, 2002 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Powerful Hurricane Kenna left three people dead and scores of others injured as it toppled trees and power lines in Mexico's Pacific coast, the authorities confirmed on Saturday.

Hurricane Kenna, which slammed into Mexico's Pacific coast on Friday, killed two women in Nayarit state and another one in Jalisco States.

In Jalisco's Puerto Vallarta, a tourist resort, at least 52 people were injured as the hurricane hurled objects through the air, leaving debris strewn in streets.

Also in Puerto Vallarta, about 2,000 residents, including some 300 tourists, were evacuated in anticipation of floods caused by the hurricane.

Kenna hit the Mexico coast as a damaging Category 4 storm but quickly abated as it moved inland.

The National Meteorological Service said Kenna, along with Paulina in 1997, Gilberto in 1988 and Isidore in September of 2002 are the four most powerful hurricanes ever hitting Mexico.
