President pledges livelihood assistance for Rakhine flood victims

May Pyi Taw, 6 Aug — The government will provide livelihood assistance to those who lost family members in the ongoing flood disaster, and will help them recover and rebuild their lives, President U Thein Sein told local people Thursday in Sittway, Rakhine State.

The president stressed the need to keep a sense of humanitarianism, patriotism and accountability, urging departmental officials and locals to join hands in the effort. Rakhine State Chief Minister U Maung Maung Ohn reported on the flooding triggered by Cyclone Komen, its devastating effects and recovery activities.

These activities will include the rehabilitation of homes, livelihoods, fishery and agricultural industries, and paddy seed stocks.

The president provided emergency supplies for local flood victims through the chief minister. Kanbawza Bank, Shwe Than Lwin Company and Cooperative Bank donated K600 million, K860 million and K600 million, respectively, for flood relief.

President U Thein Sein went to MraukU and Minbya towns, where he provided relief supplies and explained recovery activities. During his inspection tours, the president visited Myathalun Pagoda in Magway and Aung Bodhi Dhamma Retreat in MraukU of Rakhine State.

Damaged transport facilities in Rakhine State are now being rebuilt, with Yangon-Sittway Road back in use as of 6 August.—MNA
