In early 2015, HealthRight partnered with a clinic in Nepal, which serves a very poor community in the Kathmandu valley. Following the April earthquake and the many weeks of aftershocks, HealthRight helped the clinic secure a grant from the American Jewish World Service, which allowed the clinic – named Friends of Shanta Bhawan – to provide care for over 5,000 survivors at their Kathmandu facility and through outreach clinics in some of the most affected regions. HealthRight is further supporting these efforts by fundraising for the clinic and collaborating to strengthen the health system for those without the ability to pay for care. Looking ahead, HealthRight will build Friends of Shanta Bhawan’s capacity to sustainably serve the very poor and most marginalized resident, including a large community of Tibetan Buddhists who have settled in Kathmandu, but have very nearly no access to care in the mainstream health system.
