Typhoon death toll rises to 27 in Philippines

MANILA, Jul 9, 2002 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The death toll from Typhoon Gloria (international code-name: Chata'an) rose to 27 in the Philippines on Tuesday, with four still missing.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said two men drowned while two others were electrocuted on Tuesday, bringing the confirmed death toll from the typhoon to 27, the Philippine Daily Inquirer online news reported.

The OCD said 37 people were also injured and more than 24,000 residents were displaced from their homes by flood and landslides.

The victims include three dead and two missing South Koreans from a boat accident off Batangas province, south of Manila, at the height of the cyclone, OCD records show.

"Gloria" has moved out of the Philippines and is on its way to southern Japan but another typhoon, the "Hambalos" (international code-name: Nakri), is expected to enter the country in the coming days, the weather bureau said.

"Hambalos" is expected to dump more rain on Luzon, including Metro Manila, the weather.
