Washington - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) airlifted approximately $350,000 worth of humanitarian aid to earthquake victims in Iran on Tuesday. The U.S. chartered plane that carried the aid from USAID's emergency stockpile in Pisa, Italy, arrived in Tehran, Iran, around 12-noon local time.

USAID provided the earthquake victims with six 10,000-liter water containers; two water purification systems, each capable of supporting 10,000 people per day; 5,000 wool blankets; and 12,000 personal hygiene kits, containing soap, laundry detergent, toothbrushes and toothpaste. This aid will help those in the most affected region of Qazvin, where an estimated 5,000 homes were destroyed, as well as those in the regions of Hamadan and Zanjan.

The June 22 earthquake measured 6.3 on the Richter scale, and caused more than 230 deaths and 1,300 injuries.

The Iranian Red Crescent Society estimates that 25,000 people were left homeless by the earthquake, and approximately 2,000 hectares of farmland were destroyed. While phone and electricity lines have been reconnected in most villages, many water pipelines in affected areas are damaged or destroyed.

The United States also awarded an additional $50,000 to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to support the provision of blankets to earthquake victims.
