Starting in June, heavy rains and flooding have been reported in areas in northern, north-eastern and southern Brazil.

More than 355,000 people were affected by floods after several days of heavy rains in the northern state of Roraima in June. The Brazilian Civil Defense declared a state of emergency in seven cities (ADRA, 18 Jun 2011).

In the north-eastern states of Pernambuco and Paraíba 13,000 people were evacuated after rains that caused landslides and overflowing of rivers in July. A state of emergency was declared in 38 cities (OCHA/Government of Brazil, 25 Jul 2011).

In the south, 51,000 have been affected by rains in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (OCHA/Government of Brazil, 1 Aug 2011).
