From 7 January 2011, severe cold wave with dense fog swept through Bangladesh. According to the Meteorological Department, the temperature was 2 to 5 degrees Celsius lower than the normal average during this time of year. (IFRC, 14 Jan 2011) More than 50 people, mostly children and the elderly, died due to the severe cold and cold related diseases. A DREF operation was launched on 14 January, and the distribution of warm clothing and blankets was completed by 14 February 2011. (IFRC, 18 Jul 2011)
