Hurricane Richard made landfall in Belize on 24 October 2010 about 35 km south-west of Belize City. It resulted in notable damages to both agriculture and housing sector. Some 4,639 individuals sought shelter nationally and it is believed that thousands of other coastal dwellers voluntarily relocated inland with family and friends. There were no human casualties directly attributed to Hurricane Richard. The path of Hurricane Richard directly crossed two cities: Belmopan, the country’s capital and Belize City, the most heavily populated municipality. Numerous communities including towns and villages were also hit. Some 192,800 people were affected, approximately 58 per cent of the total population of Belize. (IFRC, 28 June 2011)
