In early 2010, Nigeria saw its worst cholera outbreak, with nearly 40,000 cases and more than 1,500 deaths reported. The number of cases were nearly three times the total for all of last year and 7 times that of 2008. An estimated 80 per cent of cases were women and children. Although the spread of cholera seemed to have been largely contained, new cases were still being reported from already-affected states, especially in the northeast. UN agencies and health partners provided technical support to the Ministry of Health by promoting hygiene and supplying camps and flood-affected communities with supplies to treat cholera.
