Since the early hours of 18 May 2010, heavy rains and gales brought by Cyclone Laila caused widespread destruction in the south-eastern coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu states. The Praksam and Guntur districts in Andhra Pradesh were particularly hard hit, as well as the Nellor and Krishna districts. Twenty-seven people were killed and more than one million were affected.
