Tropical cyclone Anne, 700 miles west of Fiji, is heading southwest at 15 knots towards New Caledonia with winds of 100 knots gusting to 140 knots. In Vanuatu, the hurricane alert was lifted. No damage has so far been reported to the northern islands. In the Solomon Islands, the cyclone passed close to the eastern islands with some damage reported, but so far no assessment figures are available apart from 2000 people estimated as affected. In the Marshall Islands (typhoon Ebeye), Kwajalein atol marshall was hit by the typhoon with minor damage to 500 houses and 350 totally, rendering 3500 people homeless. (UN DHA, 12 Jan 1988)

In the Solomon islands, the UNDRO/UNDP resident representative in Fiji reported that the cyclone Anne damage to the Solomon Islands was minimal: 25 houses, and 5 classrooms in Anuta, Duffs, and Manuopo. (UN DHA, 15 Jan 1988)

In Vanuatu, the total number of people rendered homeless is 3,100 of which 1,600 are the most severely affected. (UN DHA, 20 Jan 1988)

Tropical cyclone Anne affected New Caledonia, principally on the east coast and in the south where crop damage has been reported, but it has not been declared a disaster area. However the crop damage has been estimated at between 80 and 100 percent. (UN DHA, 20 Jan 1988)
