Heavy winds and rain in early June 2003 caused damage to many parts of the country, but especially the Sughd region and Penjikent. Figures provided by the local authorities indicated more then 700 houses and some and 10,000 persons affected. Assessments conducted by the joint Federation and RCST teams indicated two villages and part of the city had been affected in Penjikent. A total of 55 houses were totally damaged, while 125 others were partially damaged. There were reports of three dead while three were missing. Between 1,200 - 1,500 people were affected and living with relatives or in other community areas. The affected villages of Socha and Koktash were without electricity, communication network and water supply. (OCHA, 12 Jun 2003)
