Heavy rain and flooding triggered by typhoon Kammuri claimed 20 lives and caused around 300 million yuan (43.7 million U.S. dollars) of economic loss in southwest China's Yunnan Province. A preliminary investigation by the bureau reported 10 people missing, 2,400 displaced, and the livelihoods of 818,300 people affected. (Xinhua, 11 Aug 2008)

Torrential rains and landslides caused by Tropical Storm Kammuri killed at least 28 people in China's southwestern Yunnan province. The torrential rains triggered flash floods and landslides in the mountainous border province, destroying some 2,700 homes, damaging another 13,000 homes and causing an estimated US$80 million (549 million Yuan) in damages to agriculture. (CFE-DMHA, 8 Sep 2008)

Flash floods caused by Typhoon Kammuri hit the northern part of Viet Nam on the night of 8 August, leaving 162 either dead or missing, and 81 injured. Flash floods affected eight mountainous provinces in the north, including Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang, Lai Chau, Son La, Ha Giang and Bac Kan. In Lao Cai, river water levels rose as high as 84.91 metres as result of flash floods compounded by torrential rains. The province was almost completely blocked off by water. Several roads, highways and railway were damaged and 213 houses totally destroyed. In the mountain village of Tung Chin I, Bat Xat, Lao Cai province, 19 out of 40 houses in the village have been swept away, leaving 21 people either dead or missing, with several dozen hectares of agricultural farmlands levelled after the night of 8 August. Around 3,000 houses in Phu Tho province were submerged in water while in Phuong Xa commune, Cam Khe district, half of the village was under water up to the roofs of houses due to breaches in the dyke. Tropical storm Kammuri lingered over northern Lao People's Democratic Republic for several days in August, causing the Mekong River to exceed historically high levels on 15 August, reportedly the worst in 100 years. The worst-affected areas were Luangphrabang, Luang Namtha, Bokeo, Khammuane, Vientiane and Borikhamxai provinces and Vientiane Capital. An estimated 204,189 people in some 866 villages from 53 districts across the country were affected. Flash floods were also reported, causing 11 deaths. Large areas of agricultural land were inundated and more than 70 per cent of the affected areas were damaged. (IFRC, 8 Oct 2008)
