Some 400 people in two villages devastated by flash floods and landslides in late December resorted to emergency approaches like mixing ground palm tree fibre with food [...] The two villages, Meligo and Atudara, in Maliana district in the southeast of the country, saw nine houses totally swept away and seven more damaged when a sudden flood swept through the area on December 17. (IFRC, 13 Jan 2004)

Soon after the Maliana flooding, Hatuodo in the Ainaro disctrict was hit by floods, which affected approximately 450 people and destroyed crops and livestock. Notified by the government's National Disaster Management Unit (NDMO), a CVTL assessment mission supported by local volunteers and local authorities found 15 houses destroyed. Although there were no human casualties, [the effects] remained extensive with many people falling ill with stomach pains and malaria although it was difficult to ascertain whether this is entirely due to the floods.
