On 20 May 2009, the Cook Islands experienced a serious dengue outbreak, with over 900 cases reported on the main island of Rarotonga . That number reached 1214 by 18 Jun. The IFRC, government and non-government agencies coordinated a response to the threat by increasing awareness-raising in identified communities, procuring and distributing vector control kits to affected communities, and disseminating information, education and communication materials to the public.
