Federated States of Micronesia: Tropical Storm CHATA'AN, which hit Chuuk State of FSM on 1 and 2 July 2002, caused more than 60 landslides on the lagoon islands. The worst affected islands are Weno, the state capital, Tonoas, Fefan, Udot, Uman and Siis. According to the State Government, 47 people were killed, although not all bodies have been recovered, 109 people were injured, and 39 people were hospitalised. (OCHA, 16 Jul 2002)

Philippines: Monsoon rains started on 6 July, and was followed by typhoons "Gloria" (international name: Chata'an) and tropical storm "Hambalos", which spawned floods and landslides in low lying areas of Regions I, III, IV, CAR and NCR. A total of 2,278,341 persons were affected from the 16 provinces. 310 evacuation centers opened to cater 13,216 families or 61,074 persons displaced by floods. Total number of casualties recorded due to landslides and drowning reached to 142 as of 30 July: 64 dead; 75 injured and three missing. (Govt. of the Philippines, 30 Jul 2002)

Guam: Rain from Tropical Storm Chata'an struck Chuuk State on 2 July, triggering more than 30 major landslides throughout the state's islands in Chuuk Lagoon. The landslides killed 47 people and injured dozens of others. As many as 1,300 people have been displaced, and many staple crops were destroyed, aggravating a pre-existing food shortage.
