Typhoon Rusa struck the Republic of Korea over the weekend (31st Aug-1st Sep), provoking torrential rain, floods, and landslides in the east and south of the country. A report by the Governmental National Disaster Prevention and Countermeasures Headquarters (NDPCH), dated 2 September, indicated that 47 people lost their lives, 33 were missing and 27,474 had been left homeless. In addition, 12,791 houses had been submerged. (OCHA, 2 Sep 2002)

The ROK government's National Disaster Prevention and Countermeasures Headquarters reported 151 people confirmed dead and 33 remained unaccounted for in the deadliest storms in more than 40 years. The total property damage was tallied at 5.46 trillion won (USD 4.21 billion) and a total of 88,625 people - 27,619 families - had been evacuated as of 16 September. (IFRC, 19 Sep 2002)

Democratic People's Republic of Korea: Floods triggered by Typhoon Rusa on 31 August and 1 September caused damage to parts of Kangwon Province. According to initial reports from the National Red Cross Society, 7,401 people were directly affected by the flood. Three casualties were reported by the National Red Cross Society. According to initial reports of the Government's Flood Damage Rehabilitation Committee (FDRC) the worst affected areas were the counties of Anbyon, Tongchon and Kosong. (OCHA, 3 Sep 2002)
