Typhoon Fengshen (locally named Frank) was the sixth typhoon to strike the Philippines in 2008. Entering the vicinity as a tropical depression on 18 June 2008, Fengshen made landfall in Eastern Visayas and compounded the effects of the southwest monsoon and triggered landslides, flooding and storm surges along the eastern and western seaboards. [...] According to the National Disaster Coordinating Council, more than 900,000 families (about four million people) were directly affected by Fengshen in 6,377 barangays (villages) throughout 419 municipalities in 58 provinces out of 15 regions. A total of 81,510 houses were completely destroyed, and a further 326,321 damaged. The estimated cost of damage to infrastructure and agriculture was estimated at PHP 13,525 billion (CHF 322 billion); whereby approximately 60 per cent is incurred on Panay island alone. (IFRC, 27 Mar 2009)

Torrential rain from tropical storm Fengshen killed 14 people in south China's Guangdong Province, according to local authority on 28 June 2008. The provincial flood control headquarters reported that strong rain had affected about 340,000 people, destroyed more than 1,200 houses and inundated more than 640,000 hectares of crops. The total direct economic loss was estimated at about 1.2 billion yuan (175 million U.S. dollars) in Guangdong. (Xinhua, 28 Jun 2008)
