The death toll from the devastating Typhoon Maemi, which swept through the southeast of the Republic of Korea on 12 September, rose to 117 as of 22 September. Heavy rain continued to fall on 17 September in the southern provinces of the country, which stalled recovery work in the regions ravaged by the typhoon. The property damage was estimated at up to USD 4.1 billion, with 5,000 houses destroyed and another 13,000 homes damaged. (OCHA, 22 Sep 2003)
