Two weeks of sustained rains in the central Philippines triggered a landslide in Southern Leyte: On 17 February 2006, at 10 a.m. local time (02:00 GMT) a landslide hit the village of Guinsaugon (estimated population 1,400) near the town of St. Bernard. The village was hit by a second landslide at approximately 10 p.m. local time (22:00 GMT) the same day. The second landslide resulted in the evacuation of 11 surrounding villages as a preventive measure. The Philippine Geosciences Bureau estimated that the landslide was 4 metres deep and covered an area of approximately 3 square kilometres. (OCHA, 19 Feb 2006)

On 24 February, the Governor of Southern Leyte Province officially announced the end of search and rescue operations in Guinsagon village. (OCHA, 27 Feb 2006) The 17 February 2006 incident buried 281 houses and a school filled with elementary students and teachers and resulted in 1,126 people being killed and affected some 8,000 people directly and indirectly.
