Assessments indicated that a further 1.3 million people out of the total population of 6.7 million were at risk of food shortages as a combined result of reduced agricultural output and the global food crisis. Earlier in the year, Tajikistan experienced its most severe winter in 44 years, drought and locust infestation, in addition to significant increases in food and fuel costs that undermined access to food for large segments of the population. (OCHA, 25 Sep 2008)

The food security monitoring in October and November identified almost 650,000 people as severely food insecure and 1.5 million as moderately food insecure. (WFP, 31 Dec 2008)

Acute and chronic malnutrition increased significantly since January 2009. The almost double increase in wasting appeared to be related to a high incidence of diarrhea in children during the summer months. About 1.4 million people were identified as food insecure (390,000 severely food insecure). Compared to the previous round (May 2009), the extent of food insecurity in Tajikistan remained the same: More than half of those who were food insecure were chronically food insecure. The rest were victims of shocks, which explains variation between zones over time. (WFP, 19 Sep 2009)
