On 10 October 2019, the Sudan International Health Regulations (IHR) National Focal Point (NFP) notified WHO of 99 suspected cases of dengue fever in Kassala State. The first reported case presented to the health facilities on 8 August 2019...From 8 August through 4 November 2019, a total of 1,197 suspected cases of dengue fever including five deaths have been reported from seven states: Kassala (1,111 cases; 3 deaths), West Darfur (43 cases; 1 death), North Darfur (29 cases; 1 death), Red Sea (9 cases; 0 deaths), South Darfur (3 cases; 0 deaths), Gadarif (1 case; 0 deaths) and North Kordofan (1 case; 0 deaths)...The current dengue fever outbreak is coinciding with other ongoing outbreaks of chikungunya, rift valley fever, malaria, and cholera. Control and response capacities of the public health sector is limited; years of political and civil conflicts have reduced the country capacity to control and prevent outbreaks...The high likelihood of co-infection with chikungunya and/or malaria complicates case management and may result in poor prognosis. The Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) of Sudan reported 366 new cases of dengue during epidemiological week 49 (1–7 December) of 2019. The cumulative number of reported cases since week 31 (28 July – 5 August) this year is 3823 cases including 11 associated deaths, giving a case fatality rate of 0.28%. The attack rate was 4.75 per 10 000 population. Among all reported cases, 46% are female and 70.8% are older than 15 years of age. (WHO, 9 Dec 2019.)

The Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) of Sudan reported 186 new cases of dengue during epidemiological week 50 (7–14 December) of 2019. The cumulative number of reported cases since week 31 (28 July – 5 August) this year is 4031 cases including 13 associated deaths, giving a case fatality rate of 0.32%. The attack rate was 1.5 per 10 000 population. Among all reported cases, 46% are female and 70.8% are older than 15 years of age. (WHO, 17 Dec 2019.)

Communicable diseases (diphtheria, cholera, dengue fever, Rift Valley fever and chikungunya) continue to be reported across the country. Between 8 December 2019 and 8 January 2020, the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) reported 346 new dengue cases. This brings the total cumulative number of dengue fever cases as of 8 January to 4,225 (13 deaths). (OCHA, 27 Jan 2020.)
