An estimated 130,000 people in several countries in West Africa were affected by severe flooding following several months of heavy rainfall in 2008. Villages were submerged and homes, crops and infrastructure destroyed. The most affected countries were Togo, Ghana, Niger, Benin, Mali, Burkina Faso and Senegal. Floods also affected Liberia and Mauritania, though with less humanitarian impact. (OCHA, 10 Sep 2008)
