More than 7,000 people tested positive for dengue fever in Swat District of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province since September 2013 and as of 15 Oct at least 26 people had died from the disease. (OCHA, 15 Oct 2013). By 20 Oct, the number of cases stood at 8,546 and 33 deaths had been reported (WHO, 20 Oct 2013).

Although dengue fever outbreaks have been reported cyclically in Pakistan since 1994, one of the major striking feature of 2013's trend was that cases were reported from areas that do not fall in the traditional endemic belt of the country, such as Khyber Pakthunkhwa and Balochistan province. (WHO, 15 Sep 2013).

From 1 Jan to 31 May 2014, a total of 185 lab-confirmed Dengue fever cases were reported; out of these 179 positive cases were from Sindh province and six from Punjab province, with a decreasing trend. No cases were reported from Khyber Pakthunkhwa and Balochistan. (Govt/WHO, 4 Jun 2014)
