Uganda: Measles Outbreak - Aug 2013

Types de catastrophes

In January 2013, a measles outbreak was confirmed in Hoima district, followed by a protracted sequence of outbreaks in Kyenjojo in April, Isingiro in June, Mubende in July, and Kamwenge in August. By mid-August, 57 confirmed cases and two deaths had been recorded. A UNEPI/UNICEF report from 2011 estimates the number of un-vaccinated children in Uganda at over 1 million. (IFRC, 22 Aug 2013)

As of 6 Oct, a total of 129 cases had been reported with only two deaths since the declaration of the outbreak. With the implementation of measles supplementary immunization activities and intensification of routine immunization in Isingiro and Kyenjojo, the cases in these affected districts have drastically reduced. (IFRC, 8 Nov 2013)

The response operation was successfully completed by end of December with an end of campaign field survey to estimate the impact of URCS activities. A preliminary final report was issued on 2 June, 2014 pending the availability of the final financial report. A balance of CHF 5,179 at the close of the operation will be returned to DREF. This final report contains a detailed outline of the activities implemented during the timeframe of the operation. (IFRC Final report, 20 Feb 2015)
