Hurricane Iris, a Category 1 system threatened Jamaica resulting in the activation of the Jamaica National Emergency Operations Center on October 5, 2001. Representatives of the Jamaican Defence Force, Jamaica Public Services Company, the Ministry of Health, Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Fire Brigade attended the meeting. Communication support was provided by the Jamaica Amateur Association and the CB Association.

As the storm continued to approach, the National Response Team met on Saturday October 6 and briefed the Prime Minister. The Prime Minster addressed the nation apprising them of the situation and all Parish Emergency Operation Centers were activated.

Iris' passage over the eastern part of Jamaica had minimal impact with four (4) houses being affected. Two were completely destroyed while two lost their roofs. One occupant from one of the collapsed house was reported injured and was hospitalized. None of the shelters were utilized and no damage was reported to utilities, infrastructure or critical facilities.
