New flooding in India kills 70 people and displaces 150,000

• In the last few days heavy rain affected north-eastern India, in particular the states of Assam and Meghalaya, causing damage and deaths.

• More than 70 people were killed and over 150 000 people have been displaced in 227 relief camps. 11 National Disaster Response Force teams comprising over 550 personnel and Border Security Forces have been deployed in rescue and relief operations.

• The flood situation is gradually improving with reduced rain, although many areas still remain inaccessible.

• On 26 September isolated heavy rains may still affect north-eastern India. The Brahmaputra River and its tributaries are still flowing above the danger levels in several places, with falling trend.

RECENT FLOODS IN INDIA

At the beginning of September, very heavy rains affected north-western India causing floods and landslides. In Jammu & Kashmir several districts were affected and approx. 280 people were killed .
