Rescue and relief operations are ongoing in Jammu and Kashmir after landslides caused by severe flooding that began on 2 Sep, killed at least 215 people and left 150,000 people still stranded. More than 184,000 people have so far been rescued by the armed forces and National Disaster Response Force. Around 137 relief camps are operating in the Kashmir valley assisting over 100,000 people.

PHILIPPINES

Typhoon Kalmaegi formed on 10 Sep over the south-west Pacific Ocean and made landfall around Cagayan and Isabela provinces on 14 Sep bringing maximum sustained winds of 120 kph with gusts of up to 150 kph, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (PAGASA).

According to the latest National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council report, over 7,800 people are displaced and seeking shelter in 36 evacuation centres in Regions I, II, III, IV-A, CAR and NCR. Three deaths were reported due to the sinking of a sea passenger vessel along the Southern Leyte-Surigao coast.On 14 Sep, the Humanitarian Coordinator was briefed on the situation by representatives of the Office of Civil Defense and Department of Social Welfare and Development. The Government is leading the response, including the distribution of food and non-food items to the affected people. The Government has not requested international assistance.

Kalmaegi is forecast to move west northwest at 30 kph away from the Philippines towards Viet Nam where it is expected to make landfall on the afternoon of 16 Sep affecting the northern provinces of Quang Ninh, Hai Phong,Thai Binh.

CHINA

On 14 Sep at least 10 people were killed in landslides triggered by severe rain in Chongqing Municipality and Sichuan Province in south western China. Local governments have relocated more than 23,300 people to safer places and rescued 604 people. The rain has affected over 2,600 hectares of farmland and thousands of livestock in the region.

NEPAL

In Aug heavy rainfall caused floods and landslides in 17 districts. Recent assessments report 29,000 families still affected, of which 5,200 families continue to be displaced. The Government of Nepal is leading the response, including the distribution of food, blankets, mosquito nets, shelter and medicines with support from international organisations.

INDONESIA

On 12 Sep, Mt. Slamet in Central Java erupted causing minor tremors and volcanic ash to spew up to 1 km into the sky. Mt. Slamet is likely to continue to erupt, threatening areas within a 4 km radius from the crater. Local authorities have led coordination efforts including the distribution of 56,000 masks and establishing two evacuation shelters to accommodate over 23,500 people.

SOLOMON ISLANDS

Since Jul 2014, there have been 1,308 cases of measles reported in Honiara, Choiseul, Guadalcanal, Isabel, Malaita, Makira, Renbel and Temotu provinces, including three related deaths (one adult and two children less than three months of age). The Ministry of Health and Medical Services, with the support of partners, has launched a mass measles vaccination campaign to target people aged 6 months to 30 years
