The number of displaced population remains stable, however the security situation is tense in some areas, limiting access and delivery of humanitarian assistance. It is estimated that 708,900 people are displaced inside South Sudan and a further 222,000 have sought refuge in neighboring countries.

The humanitarian situation in Malakal (Upper Nile) is deteriorating. Over 20,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) are living in a congested space at the Protection of Civilians Site (PoC). There is a serious shortage of water and cases of malnutrition are increasing. The potential for outbreaks of water borne diseases and malaria is high. UNICEF is stepping up its efforts in this area, despite the fragile security situation and cancellation of flights that limits access.

UNICEF’s supported WASH activities in most of the PoCs were disrupted by the rainy season. In Tomping PoC, 150 latrines were decommissioned because they were damaged by the flooding. UNMISS, through the Japanese Battalion, is repairing/constructing the drainage to allow surface water out of the IDP locations.

Despite a reduction in morbidity in most of the IDP camps, there is likely to be an increase in diarrheal diseases and malaria due to the start of the rainy season.
