Mozambique: Flood Update

As of 14 March:

  • 7 basins are on alert: Pungué, Zambeze, Limpopo, Messalo, Lugenda, Incomáti and Maputo
  • Maputo, Umbeluzi, Incomáti and Limpopo Basins in Southern Mozambique (and also covering Swaziland) are at risk of inflows due to rains.

Rains from 12 and 13 March affected most districts of Maputo province. In Maputo city, a total of 262 houses in informal settlements have flooded.

Comoros: 4.8 earthquake in Anjouan island A 4.8 Richter scale earthquake hit Anjouan island on 12 March at 23h43, hitting particularly Marahare, Sima and Mutsamudu localities. The main issue has been panic amongst affected population, evacuated themselves from their homes and went to the stadium to seek refuge.

Namibia: cholera cases on the decline As of 16 March 2014, the total cholera figures in Khomas region is 44 suspected cases, 4 lab confirmed and 2 deaths. Last case admitted was on 13 March. The situation remains stable.

Madagascar: Government recognised by the IMF and reintegrated On 13 March, the Malagasy Minister of Finance officially announced the re-integration of Madagascar into the IMF countries.

Malawi: Humanitarian update of 17 March Food Security: There have been delays in food distribution throughout February due to lack of access and government-provided maize delays could imply food distribution to continue throughout April. Crop assessments of 2014 cereal have provided positive provisional results, providing favourable rains continue.

Resilience: FAO will be receiving $2 million from the Pan-African DRR fund, which will be used for Resilience pilot. This will be in collaboration with UNICEF (nutrition community linkage, joint school kitchen gardens) and WFP (seasonal livelihoods planning), and is still in development, with communities/districts yet to be identified. UNRCO has requested to be more linked to regional resilience activities. Resilience consultant is looking into restructuring the humanitarian coordination systems.
