Summary: CHF 299,744 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 31 July, 2013 to support the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Red Cross Society in delivering immediate assistance to 5,000 families (20,000 beneficiaries).

DPRK RCS, with the support from IFRC, has carried out the flood response and relief operation in North Hwanghae, South Pyongan and North Pyongan provinces which were severely affected by the flash floods in July 2013. The DPRK RCS immediately distributed 4,851 family disaster relief items including tarpaulins, quilts, cooking sets, jerry cans, water purification tablets, 381 shelter kits and 1,733 family hygiene kits to the flood victims. Approximately 120,000 litres of clean drinking water were produced by the DPRK RCS’s water purification plants which were delivered to 11,000 people per day in Anju city, South Pyongan province and Taechon county, North Pyongan province. Over 3,385 Red Cross volunteers were mobilized for evacuation, rescue, first aid, distribution of emergency relief items to the affected people and for hygiene promotion among community people in close cooperation and coordination with the local authority and other public organizations. The relief phase of the flood response activities was completed in the week of August 2013.

The IFRC, on behalf of the DPRK RCS, would like to thank the generous contributions towards the replenishment of the DREF: CHF 163,000 from DG ECHO, CHF 9,400 from Japanese Red Cross, CHF 100,000 from Korean Red Cross and CHF 27,900 from the Canadian Red Cross/government .
