Namibia: Cholera Outbreak in Kunene Region (10 January 2014)

A cholera outbreak has been confirmed in Opuwa constituency in Kunene Region, northern Namibia. Since the start of the outbreak in November 2013, a total of 7 deaths and 138 cases have been reported (giving a case fatality rate of 5%), with the majority of cases having occurred since the end of December 2013. In response, the Namibian Ministry of Health and Social Services, CDC, WHO, UNICEF, the Namibian Red Cross Society and regional health staff have deployed to the affected area. Angolan authorities (the region borders on Angola) and partners have been notified. OCHA is monitoring the situation closely and had a meeting with WHO and UNICEF on 09 January on coordination and reporting.
